A Sample Lesson Plan in Mrs. Strauss' Classroom

Learners:  A beginning biology class for grades 8-12
Objectives: To introduce the students to the concept of genetics including the terms dominant and recessive genes, genotype, phenotype, and Punnett squares.  Students should have a good understanding of these terms by the end of this lesson.
Methods, Media, & Materials Students will use their own bodies to observe a genetic characteristic of ear lobe attachment.  I will use a Power Point presentation to introduce genetics.  Students will practice knowledge by playing a class trivia game. Students will demonstrate knowledge by taking a quiz.
Utilizing Media and Materials I will have the students observe each other for earlobe attachment and have them divide in two groups of attached and unattached.  After students have observed which group is larger, I will present my Power Point on genetics incorporating their preliminary observations.  We will then play a genetics trivia game as a class.  Students will then take a quiz on the lesson.
Learner Participation Will include observing the genetic characteristic of ear lobe attachment, actively listening to my presentation, playing a class game, and taking a quiz.
Evaluation I will assess if the students have learned the information by listening to the answers in the game and grading the quiz.
